How to Widen Your Turn

“It took me seventeen years to get three thousand hits in baseball. It took one afternoon on the golf course,”  Hank Aaron

Today we’re going to break down the backswing. To start the swing, we want to lead more with the chest vs starting the swing with our hands. The more you can swing with the chest opening up in the backswing, the more power you will generate, and you’ll eliminate hitting behind the ball or topping it.

Before we get into our golf posture, we’re going to start from the standing position with your back straight and your arms straight in front of you. From there, keeping your head still, rotate your chest as open as you can and allow your arms to follow. While you’re doing this, make sure your shoulders aren’t shrugging up as that will limit how much you can turn. Rotate in both directions and notice how naturally your hips rotate behind you in the swing. Without even trying, you’re essentially doing the backswing from a standing position

Now, to build on this feeling, take a stability ball and hold it in between your forearms (not your hands). Get into your golf posture and from there feel your chest rotating the ball straight back with straight arms. If you just use your arms, the ball will touch your body.

To give you a touch point, stand a couple feet away from a wall with the goal in mind to touch the ball to the wall. You'll almost feel like you're stretching open in the swing. Now you’re ready to bomb it!

Till next time hit em’ long and straight,
